Andhra Pradesh Tests Solar-Powered Floating Greenhouses for Coastal Farms

Andhra Pradesh’s Agricultural Research Institute has installed floating greenhouses on brackish lagoon waters near Machilipatnam. Structures built on pontoons allow cultivation of leafy vegetables and herbs in nutrient-controlled soil beds, protected by transparent plastic domes. Solar panels on the roofs power water pumps, aeration systems, and LED grow lights—enabling continuous cropping cycles despite salinity. Initial trials produced high-quality greens with half the water usage compared to land-based farms. Coastal farmers earned premium prices through online farmer-markets. The project promotes sustainable coastal agriculture with efficient land use and market linkages, and plans are underway to train 200 more farmers in the floating systems.
